How we counted, and where this comes from

We read the official Jefferson County (Louisville) 2026-27 calendar on October 4, 2026: https://files-backend.assets.thrillshare.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/4298/Jcps/1d1e42d1-d735-4e92-99b1-dee5b02382ad/202627-ParentFamily-School-Calendar.pdf. A day counts when school is closed for all students on a weekday, or the whole district lets students out early. Holidays that almost every employer observes (Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Memorial Day) are never counted. Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Veterans Day and Presidents’ Day count as holidays only when the district closes school for that holiday by name, because many employers stay open. That left 5 holidays out of the count here. Students are also off on the five teacher-only days (conferences Sep 23 and Feb 16; PD days Nov 2, Feb 15 and Mar 26), and if snow or severe weather closes schools the year runs into make-up days May 25-28 and June 1-2. Calendars change and some days vary by school, so check with your school before you book childcare.
