Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. In most large US school districts, school is out at least Wednesday to Friday, November 25 to 27, and many districts close for the whole week, Monday, November 23 to Friday, November 27. Of the 30 largest districts, 19 take the whole week off, 7 close Wednesday to Friday, and 4 close only Thursday and Friday. Classes start again on Monday, November 30. Below: the Thanksgiving break 2026 dates for those 30 districts, how many days of childcare the break really costs two working parents, and a simple plan for who covers which day.
The dates come from our own school calendars by district, built from each district's official 2026-27 calendar. Check your own school too: some schools add a half day that the district calendar doesn't show.

Two Florida districts, Hillsborough and Polk, hold some of their Thanksgiving week days in reserve as storm make-up days. If the fall brings a hurricane closure, those days can turn back into school days, so check again in early November.
How many days of childcare Thanksgiving break really costs
Most employers give Thanksgiving Day off, and many give the Friday after too, but plenty don't: hospitals, stores, restaurants, airlines and a lot of offices run that Friday as a normal day. So count the break in workdays, not school days. For two parents who both work Monday to Friday:
A full-week break (Nov 23 to 27): 4 workdays with no school (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday), or 3 if you both have Friday off.
A Wednesday-to-Friday break: 2 workdays (Wednesday and Friday), or 1 if you both have Friday off.
A Thursday-and-Friday break: 1 workday (Friday), or none if you both have it off. Watch for an early release on Wednesday, which still costs an afternoon.
If each of you covers by taking a day of PTO, a full-week break is up to four days of leave between the two of you, in the same month many people are already saving days for the winter holidays. Add the days to the rest of the year's days off and they pile up: across the 30 largest districts, the typical district has about 26 weekdays a year when school is closed or lets out early that aren't federal holidays (our school calendar study for working parents has the full count).
The plan: one name per day, decided the week before, in writing
The break goes wrong the same way every year. Both parents know it is coming, nobody says who has which day, and on Sunday night it turns out you both assumed the other one had Tuesday. The fix is small and works best done early:
Write the days down. List every weekday of the break that is a workday for either of you. For a full-week break, that is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Put one name on each day. Not "we'll figure it out" and not "both." One adult who is responsible for the kids that day, even if that person's plan is to hand them to a grandparent or a camp.
Decide it the week before at the latest. The Sunday of the week before, November 15 or earlier, is a good deadline. Camps fill, grandparents make their own plans, and PTO needs a manager's yes.
Put it in writing where you both see it. A shared calendar or a note in your family chat. A plan only one of you remembers is still one person's job. If you already hold a weekly family meeting, make Thanksgiving week the first item two Sundays ahead.
Name a backup for each day. A sick child or a work emergency will move one of the days. Agree in advance who steps in, the same way you would for a sick day.
The early-release Wednesday trap
The day before Thanksgiving catches more families than the break itself. In a district that closes only Thursday and Friday, Wednesday often looks like a normal school day on the family calendar, but many schools let out early. In our table, Baltimore County closes schools 3 hours early that Wednesday, and Montgomery County in Maryland has early release on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. Individual schools elsewhere may add their own early dismissal, which only appears in a school newsletter or a teacher's email.
Treat a half day as a full plan. Someone has to be at the door at noon, and a half day usually costs a whole workday for whoever covers it. For more on these days, read our guide to early release days for working parents.
What to do about Monday and Tuesday of a full-week break
If your district closes the whole week, Monday and Tuesday are the hard days: most employers are fully open, and family is often not in town yet. Some options, and most families mix two or three:
A Thanksgiving week camp. Rec centers, YMCAs, museums and sports clubs often run two- or three-day camps for exactly these days. They fill early, so book soon if you want one.
Grandparents or family. If someone is coming for Thanksgiving anyway, ask whether they can arrive on Sunday instead of Wednesday and take Monday and Tuesday. Ask now, while they are still booking travel.
Split each day. One parent works early, 7 to 1, and the other works late, 1 to 7. It works only if both jobs allow it, and it is tiring, so keep it for one or two days.
Take turns on PTO. One parent takes Monday, the other takes Tuesday. Then swap the order next year, or alternate with the winter break, so the same person isn't always the one who takes the day.
Whatever you choose, keep it fair over the year, not just this week. If one of you always ends up home on school breaks, our free game Who does it? shows how differently the two of you see who does what.
Travel day logistics
If you travel for Thanksgiving, the travel days need names too. Wednesday, November 25, and Sunday, November 29, are usually the most crowded days on the roads and at airports. Decide who is doing what on those days before the week starts:
Who leaves work early on Wednesday, if you leave that day, and who picks the kids up if school is still in session.
Who packs for the kids, and who checks the flights or the car.
Who handles the pets and the house: the sitter, the mail, the thermostat.
Who is on for Monday morning. Coming home late on Sunday means a tired Monday. Agree who does drop-off on November 30, and check whether school starts on time.
Where Zazu helps
The dates are the easy part. The hard part is noticing them in time and getting a name on each day before the week starts. We built Zazu, the AI family assistant for working parents, for exactly that. It lives in iMessage and WhatsApp, with no app to download. With your permission it reads the family's email and calendars, Google or Microsoft 365, so when the school sends the Thanksgiving notice, Zazu tells both parents the break is coming, which days have no school, and asks which of you covers each day. It always asks before it acts, and it never adds an event or replies to anyone without a yes. Nothing to pay for 7 days. Then $19 a month. Cancel anytime: just send STOP.
How we checked: on October 30, 2026 we read each of the 30 district pages at getzazu.io/school-calendars, which we built from each district's official 2026-27 calendar, read day by day on October 4, 2026. Districts can change their calendars during the year, especially to add make-up days, so check your district's calendar before you book childcare. The plan and the workday counts are ours, not research findings. Spot a mistake? Email hello@getzazu.io.
