Winter break 2026: a calendar card for the two school weeks of winter break, Monday December 21 to Friday January 1, with a name on each day (Mom on Monday and Tuesday, Dad on Wednesday, Grandma on Christmas Eve, Dad on December 28, camp on the 29th and 30th), Christmas Day and New Year's Day marked as holidays, and Thursday December 31 still showing no name, with a sticky note saying one name per day, decided by Dec 1

Winter break 2026 starts on Monday, December 21, in most large US school districts, and classes start again on Monday, January 4, or Tuesday, January 5, 2027. Of the 30 largest districts, 25 begin the break on December 21. Ten are back on January 4, 16 keep January 4 as a day off and return on January 5, and four stay out longer. The full range runs from Friday, December 18 (Miami-Dade) to Friday, January 8 (Los Angeles Unified, back on January 11). Below: the dates for all 30 districts, what the break costs two working parents in workdays, and a plan for who covers which day.

The dates come from the same dataset of official 2026-27 district calendars behind our school calendars by district and our Thanksgiving break 2026 dates. Your child's school may add a half day the district calendar leaves out.

The day that catches parents is Monday, January 4. Most employers are back at work, but 20 of these 30 districts are still closed, most of them for a teacher workday. Two Florida districts also hold a day in reserve: Hillsborough's January 4 and Polk's January 5 can turn back into school days after a storm closure.

How many workdays winter break costs two working parents

Most employers close only on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and some add Christmas Eve. Every other weekday of the break is a normal workday. For two parents who both work Monday to Friday:

  • December 21 to January 4 (16 districts, plus Miami-Dade's December 18 to January 1): 9 workdays with no school.

  • December 21 to January 1 (5 districts): 8 workdays.

  • December 23 or 24 to January 1 (Philadelphia, New York City, Montgomery County, Baltimore County): 5 or 6 workdays.

  • The long breaks: 10 workdays in Dallas, Duval and Polk, and 13 in Los Angeles.

Split evenly with PTO, nine workdays is four or five days of leave each, at the end of the year, when many people have little left. Winter break needs a plan for every day.

Who covers which day: one name per day, decided by December 1

List every workday of your district's break and put one adult's name on each. Not "we'll see," and not "both of us." Finish by Tuesday, December 1: after that, camps fill up, year-end PTO tends to go to whoever asked first, and grandparents book their flights.

  1. Start with the fixed days. Mark the days either of you can't move, like a year-end deadline. Those go to the other parent, a camp or family first.

  2. Split by block. One parent takes December 21 to 23, the other December 28 to 31. Fewer handovers, fewer gaps.

  3. "Working from home with the kids" is not covered. With a young child it is half a day at best. Write it down as a half.

  4. Put it on the calendar you both use, with the name in the event title, and make it the first item at your next family meeting.

  5. Look at last year. If one of you covered most of last winter break, the other goes first this time. Our free game Who does it? shows how differently the two of you see who does what.

The half-week trap: December 21 to 23 and December 28 to 31

The break splits into two short work weeks. December 21 to 23 is three normal workdays, often with year-end deadlines, and 26 of the 30 districts are closed all three. December 28 to 31 is four more, and every district in the table is closed all four.

Watch the last school day too. In Broward, Dallas and Polk, Friday, December 18 is an early release day. Cobb County lets out early on December 17 and 18, and Montgomery County in Maryland on Wednesday, December 23. A half day still needs someone at the door at noon (see our guide to early release days for working parents).

Winter break camps and their sign-up deadlines

Camps are the usual fix for the half weeks, but winter camps work differently:

  • They often skip the holidays. Many run only on the weekdays around Christmas and New Year's, so a "two-week camp" may be six or seven days. Check exactly which.

  • Sign-ups open in the fall. City recreation departments, YMCAs, museums and sports clubs usually open winter registration in October or November, and popular camps fill before December. Look this week.

  • Ask about January 4. Many camps end when the holidays end, not when school starts. In 20 of our 30 districts there is no school that day.

  • Check your school's own care. Some before- and after-school programs run full days over the break, with a sign-up form that only goes out in the newsletter.

Grandparents and travel

If grandparents help, ask which days, not just "over the holidays." A grandparent who arrives on December 23 and leaves on the 27th covers one or two workdays of a nine-workday break. Ask if they could come for the half week before Christmas or stay through New Year's, and put their names on the same list.

A trip uses workdays too: a flight on Monday, December 21 means one of you is off that day. Decide before the week starts who packs, who books the pet sitter and who drives, and plan to be home the night before school starts.

The first day back

The first day back isn't the same everywhere: Monday, January 4 in ten districts, Tuesday, January 5 in 16, Wednesday, January 6 in Dallas, Duval and Polk, and Monday, January 11 in Los Angeles. The night before, decide who does drop-off and check the lunch account. Then add the next day off: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, is off in all 30 districts. Our school calendar study for working parents counts the rest of the year's days off.

Where Zazu helps

Winter break arrives in pieces: the camp email in October, the early release notice in December, the January 4 teacher workday nobody mentioned. Zazu, the AI family assistant for working parents, lives in iMessage and WhatsApp, with no app to download. With your permission it reads the family's email and calendars, Google or Microsoft 365, and speaks up first: it tells both parents when the break starts, which days still have no name on them, and when a sign-up deadline from your inbox is close. It always asks before it acts. Nothing to pay for 7 days. Then $19 a month. Cancel anytime: just send STOP.

How we checked: on November 4, 2026 we took every no-school weekday around Christmas from our dataset of the 30 largest districts' official 2026-27 calendars, read day by day on October 4, 2026 (download the dataset). The break is the unbroken run of weekdays with no school for students that includes December 25 (weekends don't break it), and the first day back is the next weekday. The workday counts and the plan are ours, not research findings. Districts can change their calendars, so check yours before you book a camp. Spot a mistake? Email hello@getzazu.io.
